This scan may be performed transabdominally and/or transvaginally. One or both of these methods will be performed:
- Transabdominal (through the abdomen). With an abdominal scan, ultrasound gel is placed on the abdomen and the ultrasound transducer moved across it to form an image.
- Transvaginal (through the vagina). With a transvaginal scan an elongated, thin ultrasound transducer in a plastic/latex cover is inserted into the vagina, sitting adjacent to the cervix to form an image.
Why do I need a pelvic scan?
A pelvic scan is usually requested due to a clinical presentation. Common indications for a pelvic scan include:
- Fertility investigation or follicle tracking
- Abnormal periods
- Endometriosis
- Post-menopausal bleeding
- Fibroid assessment
- Pelvic pain/bloating
- Family history of ovarian cancer
- Ovarian masses/cysts
Why specialist pelvic ultrasound matters
Pelvic ultrasounds at general radiology clinics are performed by sonographers who typically handle a wide range of routine scans and may not have the specialised knowledge or training needed to assess complex gynaecological conditions with the same level of precision. As a result, findings from these scans are often referred to our team for a more detailed assessment, meaning patients may need to undergo the same scan multiple times.
In contrast, Ultrasound North sonographers are highly trained specialists with extensive expertise in gynaecology, ensuring the highest level of accuracy when diagnosing specific conditions. Their deep understanding of gynaecological health allows them to identify subtle abnormalities and provide a more comprehensive analysis during the ultrasound. This specialised focus ensures patients receive thorough and precise evaluations tailored to the complexities of their reproductive health.
