Pelvic Ultrasound

An ultrasound of the pelvis involves examination of the uterus, endometrium, ovaries and adnexae.  A 3D of the endometrium usually being performed.
This scan may be performed transabdominally and/or transvaginally.  One or both of these methods will be performed:

  • Transabdominal (through the abdomen).  With an abdominal scan, ultrasound gel is placed on the abdomen and the ultrasound transducer moved across it to form an image.
  • Transvaginal (through the vagina).  With a transvaginal scan an elongated, thin ultrasound transducer in a plastic/latex cover is inserted into the vagina, sitting adjacent to the cervix to form an image.

A pelvic scan is usually requested due to a clinical presentation.  Common indications for a pelvic scan include:

·         Fertility investigation or follicle tracking
·         Abnormal periods
·         Endometriosis
·         Post-menopausal bleeding
·         Fibroid assessment
·         Pelvic pain/bloating
·         Family history of ovarian cancer
·         Ovarian masses/cysts
